Blocked ears can be incredibly frustrating. Whether it is muffled hearing, pressure, ringing, discomfort, or simply feeling like your ears are “full,” ear wax build-up can significantly affect your everyday life.
At Rainbow Pharmacy, we frequently receive questions regarding earwax and its impact on hearing. While earwax (cerumen) plays an important role in protecting and lubricating the ear canal, excess build-up can cause discomfort and temporary hearing loss.
To help you understand this common issue and find relief, we offer a modern ear care service using the advanced Tympa system. Our aim is simple, to give patients quicker, local access to ear care in a calm, reassuring pharmacy environment without the need for hospital referrals.
What Is Tympa Ear Wax Removal?
Tympa is a specialist ear care system that allows trained clinicians to examine the ear canal clearly using high-definition digital imaging. If ear wax is present and suitable for removal, we use microsuction widely considered the gold standard of ear wax removal.
Unlike traditional ear syringing or water irrigation, microsuction does not flush water into the ear. Instead, it uses a low-pressure suction device to gently remove the wax while the clinician has a clear, magnified view of the ear canal. For many patients, the procedure is quick, straightforward, and much more comfortable than expected.
The 4 Pillars of Our Ear Care Service
-
- Careful Ear Assessment
Before any treatment, we look inside your ear using Tympa’s digital otoscope. This allows us to see if wax is present, how much there is, and whether your ear is suitable for microsuction. Sometimes symptoms like blocked hearing are not caused by wax, so we always assess first to ensure your safety. - Gentle Microsuction Wax Removal
If wax is present, our trained clinicians use magnified visualization and gentle suction to safely remove it. The appointment is carried out calmly and carefully, usually taking around 30 to 40 minutes, and we will talk you through the process, so you feel completely reassured. - Clear Digital Images
Tympa technology allows us to capture and share clear images of your ear canal. You can see exactly what your ear looked like before treatment and the clear results afterward. This transparency helps you better understand your own ear health. - All-in-One Care & Prescribing Support
Your appointment combines examination, wax removal, and a hearing screening in one convenient visit. Furthermore, if a minor ear infection is identified during your check, we may be able to provide antibiotics or antifungal treatment for a small additional charge saving you a trip to the GP, if clinically appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does earwax build up?
Earwax can accumulate due to natural overproduction, narrow ear canals, or the use of cotton buds, which often push wax further into the canal. Wearing hearing aids or earphones for long periods can also prevent wax from naturally falling away.
Can earwax cause hearing loss?
Yes. When excess wax blocks the ear canal, sound waves cannot travel efficiently to the eardrum, resulting in muffled hearing. This is typically temporary and improves immediately once the wax is safely removed.
When should you book an ear check?
You may benefit from an appointment if you are experiencing:
- Blocked or muffled hearing
- A feeling of fullness in the ear
- Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
- Discomfort caused by wax
- Hearing aid problems due to wax blockage
- Recurrent wax issues
