Meningococcal disease is a life-threatening condition that can result in life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, and brain damage. It is fatal in around 10% of cases. The viruses and bacteria that cause meningitis spread through close contact, such as sharing drinks or vapes, kissing, or living in the same home.
Following the recent surge in cases, Rainbow Pharmacy is proud to offer the new NHS Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccination service, starting on the 23rd of July, 2026.
The Urgency of Getting Vaccinated
There is a critical need to protect young adults against MenB ahead of the 2026 academic year. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported 313 confirmed cases of MenB in England during 2024/25, accounting for approximately 83% of all invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases.
- The MenB outbreak in Kent in early 2026 was the fastest-growing and largest ever seen in the UK.
- There have been more clusters than normal during 2026, with some being bigger than expected.
- Cases of IMD tend to peak each year between October and November.
First-year university students face a substantially greater relative risk of invasive MenB disease compared to their peers. Close and prolonged contact in halls of residence and at social events significantly increases the risk of contracting the disease.
Who is Eligible for the Free NHS Vaccine?
This one-off targeted vaccination programme aims to protect those most at risk. You are eligible for the free NHS MenB vaccination if you have not received a full course of the vaccine in the last five years and meet one of the following criteria:
- You were born between 01/09/2007 and 31/08/2008, which is the school Year 13 age group for the 2025/26 academic year.
- You are turning 25 years of age on or after 21/07/2026 and are due to start undergraduate higher education in autumn 2026.
- You are turning 25 years of age on or after 21/07/2026, are starting further education for the first time in autumn 2026, and will be living in further education accommodation.
International students and those from the UK Devolved Administrations and Crown Dependencies are also included in this eligibility. Eligible students will need to present evidence of an offer for higher education or residential further education entry to receive the vaccine.
The Vaccination Process at Rainbow Pharmacy
The MenB vaccine (4CMenB) has a well-established safety record. Evidence from the UK infant vaccination programme demonstrates that vaccination has led to a 75% reduction in MenB disease among eligible vaccinated groups.
For full protection, two doses of the vaccine are essential. The second dose must be administered at least 28 days after the first dose. To ensure you are fully protected before the start of the 2026/27 academic year, it is crucial to receive your first dose as soon as possible. The first dose must be administered before the 31st of December 2026.
