- A BMI of 30 or above (living with obesity).
- A BMI between 27 and 30 (overweight) with at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
How the Dosing Schedule Works
The Wegovy pill is designed to introduce semaglutide to your body gradually. This step-by-step increase known as, dose titration, gives your digestive system time to adjust and significantly reduces the chance of strong side effects like nausea.
You will typically move through four strengths, spending a minimum of one month (30 days) on each dose before stepping up:

Clinical studies have shown that patients taking the 25mg maintenance dose lost an average of roughly 16.6% to 17% of their starting body weight after 64 weeks of treatment. You should never increase your dose earlier than recommended, even if you aren’t experiencing side effects on your current strength.
Strict Rules for Taking Your Pill
Oral semaglutide has very specific absorption requirements. If it is taken with food or too much liquid, it will not absorb into your bloodstream. You must follow these strict daily rules for the medication to work:
- Fasting is required: Take the tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, after fasting for at least 8 hours (usually overnight).
- Watch your water intake: Swallow the tablet whole – do not crush, chew, or split it. Take it with a small sip of plain water (strictly no more than 120ml, or about half a standard glass).
- Wait 30 minutes: You must wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than plain water, or taking any other oral medications.
Managing Side Effects as You Step Up
Because the medication works by acting on your digestive system, gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea are common, especially when moving up to a higher dose. To keep these manageable:
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals to avoid feeling bloated or sick.
- Steer clear of rich, greasy, or spicy foods, which can trigger nausea and aggravate your stomach.
- Stay well-hydrated, particularly if you experience diarrhoea, to protect your kidney function.
- Listen to your body and stop eating as soon as you feel comfortably full.
Can the Wegovy Pill Replace My Weekly Injections?
If you are currently taking a weekly weight loss injection but find needles stressful, or you travel frequently and want a medication that doesn’t need refrigeration, switching to the daily pill is a popular and medically supported option.
- Switching from Wegovy Injections: Because the Wegovy pen and pill share the exact same active ingredient (semaglutide), transitioning is generally straightforward. You simply wait 7 days after your final injection and take your first pill on the day your next jab would have been due. Your starting pill dose will depend on your current injection strength. For instance, patients stable on the 1.7mg, 2.4mg, or 7.2mg injections can often move straight to the 25mg maintenance tablet.
- Switching from Mounjaro Injections: Changing from Mounjaro to the Wegovy pill requires a slightly different approach. Because Mounjaro uses a different active ingredient (tirzepatide), you cannot swap them on a simple one-to-one basis. You will still wait 7 days after your last Mounjaro injection, but our clinical team will carefully map your current dosage to a safe starting strength of the Wegovy pill to help your body adjust comfortably.
